Why The GO?
Way back when... sometime in 1997/98 we had to think of a name for the band. The prefix seemed like a good way to go considering that the mass market was overwhelmed with one offs i.e., Sponge, Godsmack, Blur, Oasis... you get the picture. Marc had this jazz record which featured the band on the cover. The drummer had the word "GO" fixed on his bass drum. We thought that was exciting looking. Our music, at that time, was really all over the place. There were 3 minute pop tunes and 12 minute anthems. Essentially, we wanted a name that would lend itself well to a band with too many ideas happening all at once. The name The GO would give people the immediate impression that we would adhere to the principals of classic Rock & Roll... still would give us the ambiguity to experiment in broad terms without feeling as though we were betraying some kind of pretentious identity. Rather non descript yet still positive in its exclamation and seems to appropriately suggest a move forward. Pretty nifty eh? Sadly, some people simply don't consider the name clever enough and would rather their friends catch them with a Joy Division record spinning on the turntable... if you look further down the page, I think that Lennon and Bangs had something to say about bullshit Rock intellectualism. Can't say too much though, I like Joy Division.
Then, there's OK GO and The GO... TEAM! This occasionally pisses me off. And the fact that the name is impossible to find on the internet doesn't help. But it's ours... we actually own it. Wanna buy it? Fifty bucks. Five bucks to look at it.
Tell ya the truth, I've always been proud to announce "We're The GO from Detroit!" Seems to get a pretty fair reaction.
